I am obese. That’s not a joke or an exaggeration — according to the BMI chart, at six feet tall I need to get below 221 pounds before I’m merely “overweight,” and below 180 before I’m in the healthy range. Right now I’m at 231. Still obese. Still 35 pounds lighter than where I started.
Both of those things are true at the same time, and that’s actually a useful way to think about this. Progress doesn’t wait until you cross a clinical threshold. The pounds coming off are real whether or not the BMI chart has reclassified me yet.
Something clicked for me this week about the difference between goals and systems — a concept I’ve been thinking about since coming across Scott Adams’ take on it. A goal is “I want to lose weight.” A system is “I ask Claude to build me a weekly meal plan based on foods I love, I portion everything out, I stay in calorie deficit, and I repeat.” The goal alone doesn’t get you anywhere. The system is what actually moves the needle. I’ve been running this system for 22 weeks now, and 35 pounds is what the system produced. It’s not magic — it’s just a repeatable process that I stuck to.
The week’s food highlights were genuinely good. Salmon with dill remains a top-tier dish almost every time we have it — seven ounces, 400°F oven, lemon juice, salt, garlic powder, dill, 12-15 minutes. Simple and consistently excellent. Slow cooked pork chops with wine, chicken stock, herbs and potatoes were another highlight — Happy Healthy Daughter’s request, and it delivered. Korean tofu soup with beef and mushrooms and that perfect three-minute soft boiled egg was another solid week. Chicken tortilla enchilada casserole with green taco sauce instead of cream of mushroom soup — a family recipe that works every time. Wonton soup was a last-minute audible when Happy Healthy Wife realized the beef for the noodle soup wasn’t in the freezer, and it still turned out wonderful. Tacos were great, minus the store-bought guacamole situation — lesson relearned, just make it from scratch.
The honest miss: the chicken caprese sandwich I made last week was passable but not what I hoped. Too little basil flavor, not quite the right cheese, something off about the whole assembly compared to what I know a good caprese sandwich can taste like. I’ll revisit it with better ingredients. No shame in a miss.
This week the ginger scallion chicken pita is on the menu — rotisserie chicken, fresh ginger on the cheese grater, scallions sizzled in hot oil, finished with sesame oil and salt, loaded into a toasted Costco pita with red onion, romaine, cucumber, and tomato. First bite on camera. Initial verdict: very good. The sesame, ginger, and fresh vegetables together make something that genuinely does not feel like diet food.
Coming up in Week 23: shrimp scampi, dan dan turkey noodles, honey Dijon pork chops, diet eggplant parmesan, bacon cheeseburger (92% lean, center cut bacon, quarter pound — yes, really), and buffalo chicken wings with biscuits. Week 24 is maintenance week. One more deficit week to go.
35 pounds down. 35% of the way to 165. The system is working.

The Meal Plan that Claude Created for Week 22:
WEEK 22 — AI DIET MEAL PLAN
DEFICIT WEEK · 3:3:2 PORTIONING · 3 ROTISSERIE BIRDS
===================================
ABOUT THIS WEEK
Week 22 is a seven-cooking-day deficit week built entirely around fresh proteins — three Costco rotisserie birds anchor three dinners and three lunches, while salmon, shrimp, pork, and lean sirloin fill out the rest. The Laughing Cow + Wasa Rye Crispbread snack makes its debut on Sunday and Wednesday this week and becomes a standing fixture going forward. Three rice nights are woven in to support the slow cooker pork tradition on Saturday. Bird 1 is bought Sunday and drives the casserole dinner and Monday’s lunch. Bird 2 is also bought Sunday and becomes Monday’s Chicken Caprese dinner and Tuesday’s cold bowl lunch. Bird 3 is bought Wednesday and goes straight into the ginger-scallion pita that night, with the cold chicken carrying Thursday’s lunch. All three birds: remove all skin before shredding — the skin is where the fat lives. Costco birds yield roughly 3–4 cups of shredded meat each, which is more than enough.
