If you’re headed to the South, and specifically to the East Tennessee area, you will probably want to try a barbecue place at some point. Nothing screams the South like a good old fashioned southern BBQ. We talked to a local, and the place he pointed us to was Buddy’s BBQ, the one in Sevierville. They have more than one location, but it all started in Knoxville and they have a few other locations available as well.
Naturally we tried most of their menu which included a Pulled Chicken sandwich, a brisket sandwich, a pulled pork sandwich (which surprisingly didn’t include coleslaw inside), some pork ribs, some straight pulled pork and chicken wings so that we could sample all the sauces. Along with all of those dishes, we also sampled most of their sides which included green beans, coleslaw, French fries, mac and cheese and of course hush puppies.
The three sandwiches were mostly the same, each barbequed with a nice smoky flavor and for some reason the pork sandwich seemed to have more smoky flavor than the others. All of them also came with a nice tangy BBQ sauce that you can add more of if you need it. Not a spectacular sauce, but it certainly holds it’s own compared to other sauces in the area.
The pork ribs were also nice and tender with a great smoky flavor. I guess that was the common theme at this BBQ joint is that the smoky flavors were quite good adding a great taste to each of the meats.
The wings as well had a nice crispy outside with a tender inside and once again included the nice smoky flavor of their BBQ. I used this opportunity to taste all the varieties of sauces they have. They have a spicy sauce that is very similar to a tabasco sauce. They have a dry rub if you don’t want any sauce but just want a nice blend of spices on your meats. They have their mild sauce which is the tangy sauce they put on their sandwiches and of the sauces we tried, they also had a blazin barbeque sauce which added the tabasco sauce onto the mild sauce for a great combination. Of the sauces, I enjoyed the extra spiciness from the blazin barbeque sauce which is the one I used most often. A nice tang and a nice pack of heat.
Sides wise, the coleslaw was a nice contrast to the BBQ greasiness by not having a large amount of mayonnaise to over saturate the cabbage. Seasoned nicely for a nice flavored coleslaw. The mac and cheese was nice and creamy with soft noodles making for a great addition as a side. The green beans were flavored with butter for a soft buttery goodness that you get in the south. Their fries were your standard fast food fries, nothing extra special there. But the one side that we enjoyed the most were the hush puppies. We love a nice set of hush puppies with their fried corn for a crispy outside and a tender inside. A great fried cornbread that we loved.
You could definitely do worse than trying out Buddy’s BBQ, great smoky flavor, a great selection of sauces and BBQ feasts that can feed the whole family.
